Tanu Beach at night. The bright area to the left in the dining and activity area, and the bright area to the right seems to be the hangout for the villagers and people who work here, including the high chief.

14 June 2011 (-1 in time zone):

The other "major attraction," the virgin's grave. The story says that this virgin was so pure that the lava flowed around her grave and did not touch her. It is actually pretty surprising to see a sudden hole revealing the ground below among the deep lava flow.

14 June 2011 (-1 in time zone):

A view from the now roofless church. I can just imagine what the flowing lava must have looked like. The thick ripples are preserved surprisingly well.

14 June 2011 (-1 in time zone):

One of the things to see here is the ruined church in the village of Saleaula, a result of the lava flows from the eruption of Mount Matavanu between 1905 and 1911.

14 June 2011 (-1 in time zone):

The beach. There was some snorkelling to be done here, but nothing too spectacular, although relaxing. There was also a strong and shallow thermocline, which made it a bit difficult to see is many places.

14 June 2011 (-1 in time zone):

This is the entrance to the cave. Pretty well hidden! I would have never guessed that there is a large lava tube below!

14 June 2011 (-1 in time zone):

Another guy and I ended up visiting the Dwarves Cave. The guide told us that this lava tube led all the way to the coast, but didn't take us that far in. We stopped at an underground pool that we jumped in. The cave continued past the pool.

14 June 2011 (-1 in time zone):

I was amused at the sign for Tanu Beach Fales, as I'm pretty sure the person depicted is the high chief. We were looking for rental cars and trying to plan our day.
